Since being asked to write a song for Michigan's Department of State, I have been and continue to be pleasantly surprised at how the song that I came up with "Great Lakes Splendor" ( The Michigan Department of State) has taken on a life of it's own.
I was first contacted by Dr. R. Dee Woell from the Departments communications office and asked to do some entertaining for an open house at the Paw Paw branch office. She also asked if I might be able to come up with a song to do about the department.
Although it was only a couple of weeks before the open house I told her that I would see what I could come up with. I tend to be a procrastinator and didn't really sit down to put all my thoughts together until about three days before the open house and I was literally still memorizing the words on my way to Paw Paw that morning. Fortunately no one had ever heard the song before so I don't think most of the folks there realized just how rough the song was when I performed it.
The song went over great with the people in Paw Paw. Secretary of State Candice Miller was so pleased with the song that I have been able to perform it at open houses and other department functions all over the state.
The song has received coverage in numerous newspapers and I finally recorded it in a Lansing studio to be used in a video that shows in the lobbies of Secretary of State offices all around Michigan and the song is also featured on the Departments web sight.
